Outdoor wall light replacement

Decided to replace the outdoor wall light (builder grade) with a more advanced motion detector kind and following is how we went about it. Purchased the new unit on amazon

First and formost find the breaker switch in the breaker box and switch off the power to the wall light.

Then in order to remove the current or old ligth fixture, unscrew the two screws as shown in the picture below.

Remove the mounting bracket and unhook the wires. There should be three wires, a black wire which is the hot wire, white wire which is neutral and then a bare copper wire which is ground.

Then attach the bracket that came with the new unit. The unit also came with two screws to be connected to the wall connector box.

Next step is to attach the wires from the new unit to the wires on the wall. Use the twist-on wire connectors that came with the kit for the black and white wires. The bare copper wire is connected to the metal bracket or holder and the loose end is capped off with the twist-on connector.

Slide the wires with the twist-on connectors behind the metal bracket in the connector box cavity and make sure the connectors point up so that any moisture does not enter the caps.

Final step is to place the light over this and then cap off the two screws that hold the light against the wall. Apply a thin bead of sealant on the top and sides of the lamp cover that touches the white connector box cover. The unit did not come with a bulb, so I purchased a set of dimmable LED bulbs from my local Home Depot.

So the light comes on at dusk and then switches off once it is completely dark. It will turn on automatically in the night if it senses motion. The key for this to work is to use a LED dimmable bulb. If a non-dimmable bulb is used then the light does not turn off in the night and stays on continuously.
