Holystone HS200 RC Quadcopter won't take off

I had purchased the Holystone HS200 RC Quadcopter but never had the time to learn how to fly it. I had tried to do so for a few ocassions when it was new but then it just sat on the shelf for years.

Finally this year decided to test it out and it would start, but would hardly get any lift and just hit the ground. I replaced the batteries in the controller and completely charged the one in the drone but that did not help. I did connect to my phone and the camera does work. Tried to search on youtube if there were any troubleshooting videos but did not find any that very specific on this drone.

While doing my own troubleshooting I tried rotating the blades by hand clockwise and anti-clockwise to see if they moved freely. The two in the front did but the two towards the back weren't moving freely. I could feel that they were bumping into something or skipping a gear as they rotated. So on a hunch decided to get a new battery and a pair set of new gears. It was hard to find parts for this drone and the only one that I found was rctoy357.com. Looks like this is based in China so it took just about a month to get the parts. I ordered a new 3.7V 650mAh battery, and two small and two main gears.

Following are the steps to replace the abttery and the gear assembly.

Replacing battery is pretty straight foward. Flip the drone on its back, slide the cover on which the camera also sits, and then pull out the connector. Remember the orientation of the connector and wire colors. Slide the new battery in, connect the connector verifying that wire does not block any seals and then slide the cover back on.

Replacing the gears is a little tricky as the parts are very small.

Remove the small screw as shown above. Remember the orientation of the screw hole and alignmnet of this blade cap with the blade. Make markings so that its easier to identify the orientation when we have to put everything back on.

Pull up the blade cap in order to remove it. Once that is off the blade can be removed.

Once the blade is off, the staff of the main gear is visible. It has a small whole at the top where the screw goes in the through the blade cap. Towards the bottom of the gear staff is a metal sleeve, remember not to lose it.

Turn the drone upside down and we can see the two gears the main and the small one.

Slide the main gear out. Make sure not to lose the metal sleeve around the main gear shaft if it falls out.

Following is the picture of the sleeve around the main gear shaft.

To remove the small gear I used a tweezer to slowly pull it out.

Following are all the parts in play.

I put the small gear first. Did my best to slowly press it in. Once its completly in its almost flush (not completely flush) with the plastic body of the drone. Next slid the main gear in and verified both gears move freely once in. Then attached the blade and finally the blade stop and its screw. Once everything was installed did my "hand test" by rotating the blade by hand clockwise and anti-clockwise and it did move freely now.

Followed the same steps for another gear set. Once everything was put back in, re-charged the drone and gave it a shot and it works now.
