2017 Lexus RX450h 12v battery replacement
Following are the steps performed to replace the 12v battery in a 2017 Lexus RX450h F Sport.
So open the trunk and remove the cover and towards the left of the car on the driver side is where the 12v battery is located. To remove the battery cover push the three platic pins in with your finger.
Once pushed in the plastic plugs will be loose and can be pulled out.
Then removed the red plastic cover which covers the positive terminal of the battery. The first step is to remove the connector attached to the negative terminal. There is a plug which can be pulled out (marked in red square, in the picture below) or we can loosen the nut that is shown below. I could not figure out how to pull the plug out so I decided to unscrew the nut.
Used a 1/2" wrench to remove this screw.
To loosen the connector cables used a 10mm wrench. Remove the connector connected to the positive terminal next. Also removed (pulled out) the breather plastic tube which is connected on the right side of the battery.
Next step is to remove the bracket which is holding the bracket in place. Need a deep socket wrench to remove the bracket screws.
Now just the lift the battery out using the handle on the top of the battery, Battery is pretty heavy. Battery cavity after removing the battery.
I purchased the new battery from Costco. Can't beat the price and ease of purchase.
The existing battery had a plastic cover so swapped that to the new battery. New battery also has a handle at the top.
Then it was just a matter of putting things back on, exactly in the reverse order. First attach the bracket so that the battery is secure. Plug in the breather cable. Connect the positive terminal cable first and then the negative cable terminal. While attaching the negative cable there would be a spark which is normal. Attach the additional cable that we had removed from the negative terminal.
Once done attach the red plastic cover over the positive terminal. Then put the cover back, attach the 3 plastic pins and then the main cover of the trunk. At this point the trunk cannot be closed by pressing the button on the key or the button on the trunk door or the button on front dash. I had to manually close down the trunk.
After starting the car the following amber light lights up.
The trick is to drive the car and then the light goes off. I went around the block and then it went off and stayed off. Now the trunk also can be opened and closed via the button.
That was it.
