Vacuum Cleaner fix - Kenmore Progressive (116.59319215)
Our trusted vacuum cleaner Kenmore Progressive (116.59319215) - the main attachment stopped spinning and the front light wouldn't turn on, and thus started this review/repair.
So the first step is to remove the plastic covering so that the roller can be examined and cleaned. Start by removing the two screws as shown below.
There are similar tow tabs on either side, so remove the top orange plastic cover from this two also using a flat head screw driver as shown below.
Following is what the internals look like once the orange plastic cover is removed.
The roller is held into place by the square tabs at either ends (as shown below) and the rubber belt connects the motor to the roller. In this housing we should be able to move the roller freely using our hands. If it does not move then most probably the roller is clogged due to debris/hair etc and has to be cleaned. In my case it was debris as the belt looked fine and did not need to be replaced.
Do examine how the roller is placed in this housing and how the belt is connected as it has to be put together exactly like this after the roller is cleaned.
The belt has to be properly alighed on to the groves of the motor shaft with enough clearance so that it can move freely.
My daughter used the tool shown above to remove dirt lodged into the small speace between the wooden roller and the plastic end caps. I had to also use my heavy duty wrench to kind of loosen or break the "dirt bond" that was created between the wooden roller and the plastic end caps. Once all the cleaning was done, the roller started to spin freely.
The next steps were to put everything back exactly in the reverse order. So place the bet on the roller and the motor shaft and then slide the end caps properly into the plastic hosuing. Once that is done do check by rotating the roller by hand and it should move freely. If it does not then examine where it is getting stuck and adjust the placement accoridngly.
Then snap the orange plastic cover back on. Align and connect the front edge first and then the back part will align correctly. Finally attach the two screws.
